For those who have desk jobs, you know how difficult it can be to have the motivation to participate in regular exercise. After all, for most of the day, you are sedentary: sitting in your car as you drive to work, sitting in front of a computer for eight hours, then back to sitting in your car before going home to sit in front of the television. Of course, this is not the case for every individual, but having a mostly sedentary job is not conducive to a healthy lifestyle. Keep reading for tips on how to stay active even though you have a sedentary job.

 

Change Positions Often

The human body was not created to be inactive for long periods. Doing so can cause a higher risk of developing depression, cardiovascular disease, heart issues, diabetes, and cancer. This is why it is so important to incorporate a consistent exercise routine into your schedule. Believe it or not, it can start at your desk. If possible, purchase an adjustable desk riser that will allow you to stand at your desk. It is also important to shift positions often while sitting. Staying in one place for too long can put unnecessary stress on certain parts of the body.

 

Get Up Often

This can be difficult if you are bombarded with work to do. However, getting up and walking away from your desk to get a drink of water or coffee or just taking a short stroll through the office can benefit your body. It is also beneficial to take a break from staring at your computer screen, as this strains not only your eyes but also your neck. Every 15 to 20 minutes, take a moment to look away from the screen and stretch your fingers. This will help ease the tension in your body as well.

 

Stay Active in the Office

There are numerous ways to stay active within the office, such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator, taking a walk on your lunch break rather than sitting in the break room or having a standing desk. Having a desk job shouldn’t restrict you from constantly staying inactive, nor should it. Find a new routine to keep active, even at the office.
