Bad Back Habits to Break in 2017
It’s a new year, so let the resolutions commence! While many focus on losing weight to look more physically appealing, some tend to forget about the actual wellness of their body. In addition to other resolutions that you may make, you’ll want to keep a few things in mind that could help you feel better rather than just look better. Neck and back pain can be commonplace, especially with certain tendencies that a lot of individuals share these days in regards to bad back habits. But there are a number of easy adjustments that you can make in your everyday lifestyle to remedy that constant pain in the neck and reduce your risk of potential injury.
Take a look at these bad back habits and ways to break them for good in the New Year:
Sitting All Day:
Given the nature of our society, many people have a habit of sitting all day. Whether it be at work, during your commute, or at home watching TV, we are more sedentary than is healthy. Sitting actually puts 40% more pressure on your spine than standing does.
If you’re required to sit at a desk all day, make sure to vary your posture. Leaning back at a 135-degree angle can help relieve some of the pressure on your spine. While you’re on the phone, you can also use it as an opportunity to stand up. If possible, get up at least every 30 minutes and walk for a couple minutes.
For those with a long commute, sit closely to the steering wheel and at a 90-degree angle. Also, limit the amount of TV you watch and move around during commercials.
As your mattress gets old, it wears out and loses support which can hurt your back. Replace your mattress at least every 10 to 15 years, or if you’re consistently waking up with back or neck pain.
Working out will actually help to alleviate back and neck pain. Even walking will help loosen up your joints. Yoga is a great way to help improve circulation and help with recovery from back pain. Strengthening your back muscles will also improve your posture and make you less susceptible to injury.
Overdoing Crunches/Sit Ups:
Despite popular belief, crunches can actually do more harm than good in relation to your back. If you regularly do sit ups in your workout regimen, make sure you’re doing them properly on sufficient padding to avoid strain on your neck and back.
Carrying Heavy Bags or Purses:
Over time, lugging around a purse with a hefty amount of weight can cause slouching, which will result in further pain. In addition, purses can throw you off balance, so try alternating the shoulders in which you are carrying them. It’s advised to never carry bags weighing 10 pounds or more for a significant period of time.
Lifting Objects Incorrectly:
An easy way to injure your back severely is by lifting objects incorrectly. Any time you must lift something large, always lift with your legs and NOT your back muscles. Whenever possible, avoid lifting bulky objects alone and ask for assistance.
Constantly Wearing High Heels or Shoes Without Proper Support:
High heels and flip flops both make your feet unstable. High heels cause you to arch your back and flip flops cause your feet to slide. Limit the time you walk in each of these types of footwear. During your commute or while shopping, plan on wearing flats or everyday walking shoes.
Stress, Anger, and Resentment:
Believe it or not, angry emotions can also hurt your back and neck. Stress, anger, and resentment are linked to muscle tension. These emotions can cause muscles to contract and ache, so let go of anger and forgive others. Your friends and your body will thank you!
